Glenn C. Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies, received his Ph.D. in American history from Cornell in 1976 and joined the university as an administrator and teacher in 1981. He is the Vice President for University Relations and, since 1991, has served as dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions while continuing to teach and do research. His year-long course in American popular culture is a favorite among Cornell students. Altschuler has been an animating force in the rapidly growing program in American studies and has been a strong advocate on campus for high-quality undergraduate teaching and research.

David J. Skorton

David J. Skorton is Cornell University's twelfth president and a seasoned administrator, board-certified cardiologist, biomedical researcher, musician, and advocate for the arts and humanities. Skorton came to Cornell from the University of Iowa (UI), where he was a faculty member for twenty-six years and president of the university for three years. While at UI, Skorton focused his research on congenital heart disease in adolescents and adults, cardiac imaging, and computer image processing.

A national leader in research ethics, Skorton was charter president of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc., the first entity organized specifically to accredit human research protection programs. He has served on the boards and committees of many other national organizations and has traveled widely in Europe and Asia on behalf of both academic and community projects.

Skorton attended Northwestern University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1970 and an M.D. in 1974. While in the Chicago area he also worked as a professional jazz and R&B musician.
